24 - Large and very rare warriors
hair comb in reddish/brown hard wood dating from 18th century.
Possibly Tongan or Samoan. Finely carved hardwood (1 piece of wood) . The top
of the comb looks like a stylised cross. Central panel is carved on one side
with zigzag geometric designs and on the other side is carved with nearly
opposite lines. Long teeth at the bottom
of the comb some missing ends. This item came in with a collection of
ethnographic artefacts and weapons brought back by a young lieutenant from one
of the accompanying ships of captain cooks voyage (no written provenance).
Naval dirk also listed for sale on this site. The comb measures just under 10
inches/25.2 cm long and 7 ¾ cm / just over 3 inches wide at widest point.
