19th century American Indian trade axe / trappers belt axe. Overall length is 17 inches / 45 cm. Commonly carried by riflemen, light infantry, and American Indians, this was used as both a camp tool and a weapon. The hardwood handle is probably American hickory. It looks like it has an iron bar inserted in the pommel. The axe head is handforged and measures approx. 6 inches/16 cm from edge to back and the cutting edge (widest point) is approx. 3 inches / 9 cm. Good old dark age patina some pitting in places (or forging faults). Would make a good throwing axe.
