13- 1899 pattern gymnasia practice sword.  The ability to wield a sword effectively has always been a vital factor in the basic training of a military swordsman. During the 19th century the British army became to belief that swordsmanship could be improved by the art of fencing. Which led to the introduction of gymnasium swords. These swords were used purely for practice. The sword has a pierced steel bowl handguard with a nice pierced scroll type design (not dissimilar to the 1912 pattern cavalry officers sword). Shagreen / sharkskin grip in good condition with twisted copper wire. One wire nearest the blade has broken. Straight blade measuring approx. 28 inches / 72 cm. The blade has a deep fuller and the blade is stamped to 1 side Wilkinson London with an inspection stamp showing a crown and some other marks and a w . On the other side is a crown, 35, w. The numbers 10 and a 9 stamped at the ricasso. The blade has a sharp tip. Overall length is 35 inches/ 91 cm.
