-  British martini-henry rifle socket bayonet model 1876 with a triangular full length blade. Blade length is just under 23 inches (measured from the back of the blade stem to the tip), when measured from the starting groove 21 ˝ inches. Deeply hollow ground triangular blade. Ricasso is marked with an arrow, crowsfoot over WD (war department), crown over E (Enfield inspection stamp) then /89 (re-issue nr of 1889 – probably Sudan War), issued in 1878 (stamped 78 with a line through it). Possibly first used in Anglo-Zulu war 1879 then later in the Sudan war. Socketed for the 45/55 martini-henry calibre rifle. Another inspection stamp on the mouth of the socket, socket locking ring works well. The top of the socket there is shown 2 arrows (end to end) – which is an sold out of service mark. Light pitting and staining overall. Dark age patina.
